BASICS doctors are on call in their free time to provide direct clinical care and support to the most critically unwell patients in the Thames Valley region - Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. They are dispatched by South Central Ambulance Service, responding in their personal cars on blue lights to the scene to bring Emergency Department and Resuscitation care to the patient and support our SCAS colleagues.
BASICS clinicians respond to assist any of the Emergency Services at incidents, and have close working relationships with Thames Valley Police, the three local fire services (Royal Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes and Oxfordshire) , South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and other groups such as Lowland Search and Rescue.
All our doctors respond without any NHS funding for their time, fuel or enhanced care equipment such as scalpels and splints. Our partnership with SCAS means that our medications and 'ambulance-standard' consumables are provided by the NHS, however additional equipment to provide enhanced medical care is all from voluntary contributions.
