Training and Equipment

Clinical Training

All our clinicians have completed five years of postgraduate medical training, most with many more years across a number of acute care disciplines. This provides a strong base for the additional Pre Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) experience our clinicians have, many having worked with Air Ambulances, HEMS, Police or the Military.

All full responders have attained the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh or equivalent, and so work at Level 6 of the Faculty of Prehospital Care (FPHC)'s framework or higher.

Courses and Skills

All of our clinicians have current qualifications in Adult and Paediatric Advanced Life Support, and many are Instructors. Some examples of our additional training and skills include:

  • Resuscitative Thoracotomy
  • Managing Obstetric Emergencies and Trauma
  • Major Incident Medical Management and Support (MIMMS)
  • Hospital Major Incident Management and Support
  • Adult, Paediatric and Neonatal Transfer
  • RCEM Level 1 Ultrasound
  • Focused Intensive Care Echocardiography
  • CBRN Clinical Course
  • Trauma Team Leader Course
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
  • Anaesthesia, Trauma and Critical Care (ATACC)
  • Emergency Management of Severe Burns (EMSB)

Equipment

Some of our clinicians bring additional equipment to incidents, including point of care ultrasound, which provides hospital level decision making to patient care within minutes of their illness or injury, helping guide their treatment and support decisions around resuscitation and choice of receiving hospital.

Suction Unit, Ventilators and other medical equipment is serviced through South Central Ambulance Service.

Clinical Governance

BASICS Clinicians have access to 'top-cover' through the on-call Medical Incident Adviser (MIA) for SCAS. These are experienced consultants who are on-call for major incidents but also a sounding board for our clinicians and help provide an objective perspective for the critical decisions we often make outside the hospital environment
