All our clinicians carry enhanced pain relief that normal road crews do not carry. This includes fentanyl, ketamine, methoxyflurane and regional anaesthesia. As doctors, BASICS responders can provide drugs over and above the usual practice of front line paramedics.
Many patients have painful injuries such as fractures and dislocations of bones and joints from accidents and major trauma. BASICS brings the Emergency Department to the patient, providing procedural sedation to temporarily sedate patients and relocate joints, manage fractures or provide cardioversion.
Patients who are the victims of major trauma benefit greatly from early enhanced care teams with associated expertise. Our clinicians often escort these patients to the Major Trauma Centre at the John Radcliffe, or to local Trauma Units if the patient is too unwell to make the journey to Oxford.
Our clinicians are experienced in adult and paediatric cardiac arrest management and provide a crucial addition to the chain of survival, bringing forward additional drugs for Advanced Life Support and decision making with Point of Care Ultrasound from the Emergency Department.
Our clinicians are appropriately trained to provide interventions, including Pre Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia, surgical airway, thoracostomy, thoracotomy, resuscitative caesarian section and amputation if needed, in order to treat and rescue trapped and critically unwell patients.
